DUCHESNE ACQUIRES A ROBOVIC MULTIFUNCTIONAL PALLETIZER

THE CLIENT

Duchesne & Fils is a Canadian reference in the field of building material production. The company has been serving Canadian and US renovation centers, hardware stores and specialized manufacturers for more than 90 years.

MANUFACTURER AND DISTRIBUTOR

As both a manufacturer and a distributor, Duchesne controls all steps of the manufacturing process to ensure maximum reliability for its products.

THE PROJECT

In order to keep up with the increasing development of its construction nail factory and the opening of new markets, Duchesne had to plan for greater versatility and increased production by replacing its current palletizing system.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY THE COMPANY

The company was working with a palletizer equipped with vacuum grippers which needed recurring mechanical maintenance. This particular technology caused various handling issues: on the one hand, heavy containers and buckets could not be palletized; on the other hand, handling crates from the top could lead to some falling or being deformed.

When changing production, lines had to be stopped to install vacuum grippers better suited to the new line of products to be palletized.

THE CLIENT’S NEEDS

For its new palletizing cell, Duchesne was looking for a flexible palletizing system that could work with all their 12 to 50lb nail, crate and bucket formats. They also needed to:

Come up with a solution to cover all products in a sustainable                    manner.

Switch quickly between series without any mechanical adjustment.

    Increase the palletizing process performances.

Find a solution with minimum maintenance.

Optimize the system for installation in a tight space.

ROBOVIC CAME UP WITH A TURNKEY SOLUTION

OUR SOLUTION

In order to meet the client’s various needs, ROBOVIC came up with a turnkey palletizing solution that can process various types of crates and buckets with speeds of more than 18 cycles per minute depending on the type of product.

The first step was to develop a gripper able to work with different formats of crates and buckets that stack upon one another. For this purpose, the company selected a double gripper that can lay down 1 to 4 containers simultaneously.

In order to avoid alteration and fall hazards, choosing a mechanical gripper seemed a better option so that the bottom of containers could be supported. This lowers the risk of container damage and falls during the palletizing process.

A pressurized, custom-made stabilizing system was also included for all products to eliminate random placements, with the goal of having more stable and compact pallets.
Finally, entry and exit lines allow for maximum flexibility depending on the influx of products. This system prioritizes containers depending on their position on the gripping table as a way to enhance cycle times.
